Mommy Spotlight: Sara

by Polly on February 3, 2012

Whether a first-time mommy or a weathered veteran, we believe every mother has some valuable wisdom that she’s gleaned along this crazy journey we call parenting.  Mommy Spotlight highlights a mom who is striving to create a thriving home in her own unique way.  Today, we introduce you to Sara.

Marriage and Family Status:

I’ve been married for four years and have a daughter, Lakin, who’s 18 months.

What are some things you love about being a mom?

I absolutely love watching my daughter explore the world around her.  She makes me laugh all the time and has a sense of awe about the world that I hope she never loses.  I love snuggles with her, although, as of late, those are few and far between.  I enjoy the process of teaching her about the world and herself, sharing stories with her and exposing her to new experiences.  Our life has only become richer since she entered the world.

What is one of the hardest things about being a mom?

As a mom you are always in demand.  There are no sick days, no vacations.  It’s game on from day one until they’re 18.  At times, especially in the early months of nursing, it was tough feeling the demand of parenting and meeting the every need of your sweet little one.  It takes all of you, every day, every moment.

As a mom, how do you keep yourself spiritually healthy?

Before Lakin wakes for the day I make sure I get my personal time with the Lord in the Word.  Those quiet, still moments in the morning are precious and make for a better day when I wake early enough to get that time in.  Now that Lakin is down to one very predictable nap of the day, I can use that time to read, catch up with friends, or do what I need to stay personally healthy.  As a mom, you gotta steal the moments you are given when they come.

What is some advice you would give new moms or mommys-to-be out there?

Hang in there. The first three months are a blur. There is nothing predictable about that time. Let go of your need for control, do what you need to do to survive, and trust that this too, shall pass.

Also, soak up those sweet moments with a snuggly newborn. Few things are better than spending the afternoon rocking your little one.

What are some of the most helpful books you’ve read on motherhood and parenting?

We are a Babywise family, although we used the principles more loosely than the book suggests.  Spiritual Parenting by Michelle Anthony was also a great read.  I’d recommend both books for any new parent. (Check out Rachel’s review of Spiritual Parenting).

What are a few of your favorite baby products?

1) Aveeno Baby Body Wash since our babe has sensitive skin.

2) Medela Freestyle Breast Pump made nursing as a working mom possible

3) Infantino Twist and Fold Gym for baby’s tummy time and play.

4) Nursing Cover for feedings on the go was a must.

5) Belly Button Book by Sandra Boynton is a fave in our house.

6) Playskool Flash Card Sets for learning words, colors, and shapes

7) Boon Penguin Stack for toting food while on the go

8) KidCraft Vintage Play Kitchen for pretend play

What is one of your favorite kid friendly snacks or meals?

My daughter loves cherry tomatoes (cut in 4ths) and cheese.  She’s also a huge fan of yogurt covered raisins which come in convenient, travel friendly, serving size boxes.  Those snacks are always a win in our house.

What are some tips or tricks on saving money as a mom?

One of the ways we save money in our house is by pre-planning meals and sticking to our grocery list to avoid unnecessary purchases and waste.  We also used cloth diapers for the first year.  It’s an investment up front, but we felt like they worked well, saved money on diapers.  We plan to use them for future kiddies.  It’s a commitment to launder your own diapers, but we felt like it was the best choice for our family.  It’s not for everyone, that’s for sure!

Any verses or scripture that have encouraged you or shaped you as a mom?

Jeremiah 29:11
“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” (NLT)

I second 2,3, and 4 of the baby products! And that vintage play kitchen is super cute!

OK, I know, I am not a mom. Yet. But I have to say The Belly Button Book is one of my FAVORITE books to read to kiddos (and I have read to a lot of kiddos). It’s adorable. When the kids get old enough to talk, I let them do the tiny hippo voice saying “bebo” and it’s a win! LOVE that you put that on your list–so many people I talk to haven’t heard of it!
