Simple Kid Activity For When You’re At Your Wit’s End: “What Can You Make?”

Kid Activity: "What Can You Make?"Admittedly I’m not the most creative mom. But, I do love it when I see my kids’ imaginations light up during an activity at home.

Last Saturday was a lazy day. The TV was probably on for too long. All I really wanted to do was take a nap. The little people were crabby with each other. You know what I’m talking about, right? It was time for some Momma 911. The day wasn’t going great, and we needed a new plan.

Here’s the simple activity I came up with. I don’t claim that it’s genius by any means. But, it did require use of the imagination and kept the two older kids (ages 4 and 6) engaged together amiably for quite some time. I call it “What Can You Make?” Yeah, I know. It’s a pretty awesome name.

“What Can You Make?” involves 3 simple steps:

1 – Gather boxes, string, paper bags, and art supplies from around the house. Other supply ideas include: empty plastic containers, scrap pieces of wood, scrap fabric, etc. Look for everyday items around your house that you don’t mind forfeiting.

2 – Put it all on the back porch (or another area you don’t mind getting a little messy), along with the kids.

3 – Say, “Ok, show me how creative you can be with only these materials. What can you make? Go!”

Here’s a peek at what I put on my back porch:

Well, my kids went for it and were excited to show me what they could make! Want to know what they came up with? Oh dear, I’m not sure I want to show you.

Ok, I guess I’ll show you. My super genius kids came up with…

Kid Activity: "What Can You Make?"

…a BOMB! (Is that good?) Well, as super heroes, I suppose it is an important weapon in their arsenal. Here’s the detonator:

They assured me it was just a grass bomb. When it explodes, you will get covered in grass (and a random red pom-pom and piece of construction paper?). Take that, villians!

If you try this simple activity, I’d love to hear what your kids come up with. The possibilities are endless!
