Stacking Cheerios: A Preschool Counting Game

My almost-three-year-old has been enjoying all things counting as of late. I’ve been trying to run with the momentum and find all sorts of things to count. I saw an idea similar to this on Pinterest and thought we’d give it a whirl.
Here’s the game: Take two skewer sticks and shove them into a mound of play dough. Have the toddler stack up Cheerios on the stick and then count them.
She loved it!
Not only did she love that she got to play with Cheerios but she liked the challenge of sliding it on the stick just perfectly and seeing it drop all the way down.
Of course part of the fun was eating up the counted Cheerios. When I told her she could have a bite of them I assumed she knew I meant for her to remove the stick before eating them. Nope. She just went for it.
And then she began stacking again! We went through 3-4 rounds of stacking before her attention started to wonder. It was great counting practice for her teens and twenties which we usually don’t make it to.
If you have an older preschooler, you could use this to work on addition and subtraction.
Don’t forget to chow down at the end. It’s the best part!
