A Few of My Favorite Snacks…

If you’re like me, you fall into the snack crap trap.  About the time in the day when you want a snack, only junk food calls your name!  Look, if I’m honest, I’m just as vulnerable (maybe more so because of my sweet tooth) as the next person.  My husband and I are notorious ice cream eaters!  However, I’ve found a few healthier items for me and my kids that help curb those cravings.

Popcorn – Not the microwave kind.  We’re talking the real kind you pop on top of the stove with a little olive oil and salt.  It’s the crispiest, tastiest popcorn you have ever had…guaranteed!  Plus, it’s cheap, full of fiber (which helps you feel full), and low in calories and fat.  I just follow the directions on the back of the popcorn kernel bag.  Caution:  If you have small children, popcorn is a choking hazard.  I always pull off the hull and watch them carefully when they eat it. And, for those with Crohn’s Disease, like my son, it is especially important to remove the hull.

Hummus – Like I’ve mentioned before here, I could eat hummus straight from the container.  However, I enjoy it with fresh veggies, pita chips, and crackers, too.  My 1-year-old LOVES this stuff. Health benefits:  good source of fiber and protein and low in saturated fat.

Raw Almonds or Almond Butter – This is my mid-morning pick-me-up.  Almonds provide enough (healthy) fat and protein to help satiate me until lunch.  Check out all the health benefits of this nutritional powerhouse here.  My son loves a spoonful or two of almond butter as a snack, since it’s probably not a good idea for him to have a whole nut.  For some reason, he likes this better than eating it on a cracker.  Caution:  Almond butter may be a choking hazard.  I always have him drink something right after his bite, allow only small bites, and watch him closely.

Banana Boat – Did you ever do this as a kid?  Peel a banana and set it on the plate like a boat.  Then, cut a thin sliver out of the length of a banana (from “inside the boat”). This makes a perfect bed for peanut butter or almond butter.  I’ve heard that some people like raisins or chocolate chips on top, too.  Enjoy!
