Considering all of the crazy health benefits, I was delighted to find that my 1.5 year old loved pomegranate seeds! At Thanksgiving, my parents gave her some and she scarfed them down.
A few days ago, I snagged one at the grocery store. I have never bought or peeled a pomegranate so I didn’t know what I was in for until I attempted to retrieve some seeds this morning for my little gal to munch on.
I cut it in half and started by using a spoon to fish some seeds out. Within seconds, I was spattering my counters with pomegranate juice and flicking seeds in every direction. I got enough out to appease my eager toddler but was sure there had to be an easier way to retrieve seeds from a pomegranate.
After a quick search, I discovered that yes, there was a much easier way to peel this fruit.
How to Peel a Pomegranate
Step One: Cut the fruit in half
Step Two: Fill a bowl with water and place the pomegranate face down in it.
Step 3: Using both hands, pull back the peel revealing the seeds inside. You may have to rip the fruit into smaller pieces in order to get to all of the seeds. If you keep the fruit submerged, you won’t have juices squirting on you. The seeds simply fall to the bottom of the bowl while the white membrane pieces float to the top.
Step 4: Remove excess. After separating the seeds from the white membrane, skim off the top layer from the water leaving your seeds in the water.
Step 5: Strain your pomegranate seeds and enjoy!
Seeds can be eaten plain or added to smoothies or salads. They are a great holiday treat to have around!
