5 (Slightly Shallow) Things I’m Thankful for Right Now

By Polly Conner

Happy Thanksgiving, Friends!

I hope you are busy catching up with family, eating a bit too much and doing your best to avoid the one particular family member or person that you can only handle so much of. I mean, I of course don’t have one of those but I hear it’s pretty common in big family gatherings, right? 🙂

I thought I’d take a moment and share a few things I am particularly thankful for. While I could easily fill the post with the obvious things like family, friends, kids, good health, Jesus and so on, I’m going to be a bit more shallow. Allow me a moment of your time to express my thankfulness for things that probably won’t matter in 10 years.

5 (Slightly Shallow) Things I’m Thankful For:

Maternity Pants

Screen Shot 2015-11-18 at 10.50.59 AMOh, stretchy-elastic waists, how I love thee. I could not make it through the day without thee. The belly bands can no longer handle my growing waistline but you, maternity pants, you can handle the ever-increasing size that my body takes on. You are prepared for the growing and swelling in all directions and hold my pants up like it aint-nothin-but-a-thang to you. Thank you for your services to me and my growing body.

Elmo: Wild Wild West

I am ever indebted to Elmo’s World: The Wild Wild West DVD that I scored at a garage sale once upon a time. Little did I know that it would be the only show that my rambunctious two year old boy would actually sit and watch. Thank you to Elmo’s World: Wild Wild West for giving me 30 minutes to shower and get ready for the day. For giving me 30 uninterrupted minutes to get dinner ready. For 30 sweet quiet minutes to pay bills, answer emails, return phone calls and so on. Whatever I need for the day, Elmo is there for me for 30 minutes a day. I am oh-so-grateful to you and the Noodle Gang who entertain my son with your silly dances and songs.

Childcare at the Gym

IMG_5173 copyGo ahead kids. Roll around in the germ fest and get a little rowdy in the room filled with kids of all ages that are slightly unsupervised. You’ve learned the unspoken rules of the gym childcare and you practically run the place by now. This mom is thankful to have a place to drop you off that you enjoy and that allows mommy a kid free workout. And when I say workout, I mean a little walk on the treadmill mixed with a quick visit to the elliptical followed by tons of stretching. (Thank you 20 week old baby for my achy-achy back). Regardless, this mom is thankful for your services.

Caramel Apple Pops

EIMG_5342very pregnancy has had its thing. In my first, it was fruit. I could not get enough fruit. Give me a big bowl of fruit salad and I was in heaven. Don’t even get me started about how I felt about oranges and clementines. In my second pregnancy it was hearty things like meatballs, hamburgers and even an occasional craving for meatloaf. I mean, wow. Where did that come from? I remember for a solid two weeks dreaming about diving into a Sonic cheeseburger. When I finally caved and got one, it did not disappoint. This pregnancy my thing has been hard candy. Oh sweet mercy, give me some jolly ranchers or suckers. My particular candy of choice at the moment are those caramel apple suckers. You know, the sour green ones dipped in caramel? I try to limit myself to one a day but a girl can only do so much.

My Coloring Book

6 episodes=this

Yep. I am one of those people. I have an adult coloring book and am not ashamed of it. I’ve even gone as far as getting my own colored pencils that I protect and guard from my children. (Have you seen what a 2 year old can do to a colored pencil? It’s frightening.) The primary reason I am thankful for my coloring book is because I have somehow found myself in season three of Walking Dead with my husband. This show is INTENSE. At the end of the day when my resistance is already worn down, I can hardly handle more stress in my life. My remedy: coloring while we watch the show together. Yes. Seriously. I color the entire time we watch the show. Well, at least during the parts that make me uneasy. It keeps me remain stable and stay one step removed from the intensity of zombies eating people. I even made a special trip to Target to get a pencil sharpener because the small, manual one was not cutting it. Admit it. You kind of want one too.

A few other honorable mentions:

  • Body pillows
  • Shark Tank
  • Limeade
  • Homemade soaps

So there you have it. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box when asked what you are thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
