Banana Boats

You may associate a Banana Boat with the s’mores version that’s filled with marshmallows and chocolate. But, our version is a healthy, quick snack that the kids can make for themselves. Great for after school or when you have the mid-afternoon munchies.
It began many, many years ago. About 35 in fact. My mom used to make these for me as a kid, sans the chocolate chips. She was a better mom than me, I guess.
But, here I am three decades later making “The Banana Boat” (with some little sailors, aka chocolate chips) for my kids after school quite often.
To be honest, this is a go-to snack for me when I have the 2 p.m. munchies, too. It’s satiating and sweet, but healthier than a cookie or chips.
Can this even qualify as a recipe? I think so. Hope you give it a try!

Banana Boat
A classic and healthier after school snack for kids and parents!
Ingredients
- 1 banana
- 1–2 tablespoons peanut butter (sub: almond or sun butter)
- Optional: 1-2 tablespoon chocolate chips

Instructions
- Hollow out the “canoe” by cutting out a “V” shape along the inside of the banana curve. Remove the top sliver.
- Use a butter knife to spread peanut butter inside the “boat”.
- Top with a few chocolate chips (aka “sailors”). Or, if your kids will bear it, you can add raisins. Mine don’t. They are spoiled now.
- Bonus: My mom used to pop the banana top back on. Or you can eat it by itself.

These banana boats are also great when camping. Wrap them up in foil and stuff them around the bottom of the camp fire and they make a warm, yummy snack!

That sounds awesome. I’m going to do that around our fire pit with the kids sometime!
