Does your weather look anything like this today?
Folks, I live in Missouri, not Alaska. We don’t really know what to do with ourselves. We cancel school. My neighborhood streets are barren. Everyone is afraid to go outside.
And, as all moms with kids at home know, this kind of weather equals near torture. The kids are “soooo bored”. Fighting, whining, and general discontent can rule the house in 2.6 seconds if a parent doesn’t get creative FAST. That’s why years ago I did a post about ideas for these crazy cold days at home with little kids. But, last year a friend gave me a new idea: play with snow inside!
I discovered bringing the snow in is actually less mess and work than suiting the kids up for 20 minutes, sending them out for 10 minutes, and then cleaning up the ensuing shrapnel of wet boats, coats, snow suits, and gloves. I’m sure that surprises…NO ONE. Because you know exactly what I’m talking about, don’t you?
Grab a bucket or big bowl, make about three trips outside collecting snow, and dump it in the sink. Or if you’re really ambitious, collect enough to fill a bathtub.
Pull out measuring cups, construction vehicles, cars, My Little Ponies, whatever your kid is into. And let him or her get to work building, scooping, and creating.
Boom! At least 45 minutes of entertainment on a crazy cold day!
YOUR TURN: What do you like to do with the kids on a day like today?(I bet you have better ideas than I do!)
