How I Pulled Off a Graduation Party for My Son

Planning a graduation party is such a special way to celebrate your graduateโ€”but letโ€™s be honest, it can also feel overwhelming. I pulled off a high school graduation party for my oldest son last spring with some other families, so I know what it takes.

Rachel's family at her son's graduation party.

Between guests coming and going, kids grabbing food at all hours, and wanting things to feel festive and easyโ€ฆyou need food that works hard for you. Thatโ€™s where this graduation party food list and my tips come in.

Make-Ahead Tips for Stress-Free Hosting

First, let’s talk about how to pull it all together without the last-minute chaos…

  • Prep ahead whenever possible. Many of these recipes below can be made earlier in the dayโ€”or even frozen ahead of time.
  • Use slow cookers. They keep food warm and free up oven space.
  • Go disposable (no shame!). Save yourself the cleanup and focus on your people.
  • Set out food in waves. This keeps everything fresh and prevents overcrowding the table.
  • Recruit help. I highly recommend recruiting other families to help. ๐Ÿ™‚ We divided up the tasks, like decorating, reserving the space, set up and clean up, and preparing or buying the food.
  • Take shortcuts. We bought popcorn in very large bags at the movie theater for a very reasonable price, as well as, cookie cakes from our local grocery store.

Now, on to the graduation food!
