Can You Freeze Brownies?

The simple answer is a resounding yes! Freezing brownies–either individually or still in the pan–is a fantastic way to extend their shelf life without compromising on taste and texture. If you follow our tips below, brownies will remain good in the freezer for 1 to 3 months.

Note: Brownies have a unique fudgy or cake-like texture, and freezing them can dry them out a little bit. However, with the right packaging, freezer timing, thawing, and reheating techniques, you can enjoy fresh-tasting brownies anytime from the freezer.

How to Freeze Brownies

  1. Cooling is Key: Before you even think about freezing your brownies, make sure they are completely cooled. Rushing this step can lead to condensation inside the packaging, resulting in ice crystals forming and eventually soggy brownies.
  2. Proper Packaging:
    • Opt for airtight and moisture-resistant packaging to shield your brownies from freezer burn and unwanted odors.
    • Consider using plastic wrap, aluminum foil, freezer storage bags, or freezer-safe containers (here are our favorite freezer containers and packaging methods).
    • Individually wrapping each brownie is an excellent option, as it seals in moisture and allows you to thaw only the amount you need at a time, preventing unnecessary re-freezing.
    • When freezing a pan of brownies, wrap it in multiple layers of plastic wrap and/or foil and squeeze out the air.
  3. Layering Techniques: If you’re stacking brownies for freezing, place a sheet of parchment paper between layers to prevent them from sticking together. This small step can make a big difference when it comes to maintaining the integrity of each individual brownie.
  4. Labeling and Dating: Time has a way of making treats mysteriously forgettable in the freezer. Avoid the guessing game by labeling your brownie packages with the date of freezing. This ensures you can enjoy them at their peak freshness and flavor within a reasonable timeframe.

How to Thaw and Reheat Frozen Brownies

  1. Thaw Slowly: When the brownie craving strikes, resist the urge to microwave them straight from the freezer. Instead, allow them to thaw at room temperature or in the refrigerator for a more even and controlled process. This prevents them being overcooked in the microwave and becoming tough.
  2. Reheat for Freshness: If you prefer warm brownies (who doesn’t?), here are some reheating options for individually cut up brownies:
    • Pop them in the oven for a few minutes after thawing to revive their freshly baked taste. A quick reheat at a low temperature, around 300°F (150°C), should do the trick without compromising the texture.
    • Microwave in just 10 second increments until warmed.
    • Use the reheat setting on the air fryer for 1 minute.

FAQs About Freezing Brownies

Can you freeze brownies with frosting?

Yes, you can freeze brownies with frosting. Just make sure they are in an air-tight container and the frosting doesn’t touch the top. If freezing with the frosting, I would suggest using your brownies within just a few weeks.

How long can you freeze brownies?

If packaged well (minimum exposure to air), non-iced brownies can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months without significant loss of quality. Beyond that, they will still be safe to eat if they remained frozen, but the texture and flavor will likely deteriorate.

Can you freeze brownie mix?

Our Homemade Brownie Mix can be frozen for up to 9 months for longer storage. Place in a labeled freezer bag, squeeze out any excess air, and seal tightly before freezing.

Can you freeze brownie batter?

I personally think this would be a mess. I would opt for either freezing the brownie mix or baking, cooling, and freezing the completed brownies instead.
